[Popular Cocktail] Moscow Mule | Editor: Mark Ma

Moscow Mule — A spicy, refreshing, bubbly classic cocktail 🍋🧊🫚

The Moscow Mule is a classic cocktail made with vodka, spicy ginger beer, and fresh lime. Originating in 1940s Los Angeles, this drink boasts a distinctive gingery, sweet-sour, and effervescent flavor, making it perfect for Hong Kong's sweltering heat and humidity, as well as for parties, happy hours, and more! Even more iconic is its copper mug—not only does it retain its ice well, but it's also instantly recognizable as a unique drink. We highly recommend it—easy to style, stylish, and addictive!

Moscow Mule Classic Recipe

  • 45-60 ml of vodka

  • 10-15 ml fresh lime juice (about half a lime)

  • 100-150ml ginger beer (strong ginger flavors like Fever-Tree and Bundaberg are the most authentic)

  • Lots of ice

  • Lime slices and mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Preparation method

  1. Add plenty of ice cubes to the Moscow Mule copper mug to chill the entire mug instantly.

  2. Pour in vodka and squeeze in fresh lime juice.

  3. Fill up on ginger beer and enjoy a burst of bubbly.

  4. Stir gently with a spoon to fully incorporate the ingredients.

  5. You can garnish the rim of the glass with a lime slice or add mint leaves for a fresher feel.

Taste and characteristics

The Moscow Mule's sizzling, gingery flavor is instantly recognisable, with a tangy lemony aroma and the clear, unadulterated body of vodka. It's refreshing and stimulating, with a sharp throat finish and a rich, bubbly ginger flavor. It's both warming and incredibly refreshing! This drink holds up well even when served on ice, making it a thirst-quenching drink in the summer heat and a warming and cooling drink in the autumn and winter. I love the Mule's straightforward, spicy flavour, making it a perfect match for Hong Kongers seeking excitement and novelty.

Interesting Stories and Variations

  • Despite its name, the Moscow Mule was invented by Americans and is one of the key ingredients in vodka's popularity in the US. Vodka, ginger beer, and a copper mug are essential for a truly authentic drink!

  • There is a non-alcoholic "Ginger Beer" version, but don't use ginger ale, otherwise it will not be able to show the spiciness and character of the authentic Mule.

  • If you like variations, you can try the "Kentucky Mule" (using bourbon whiskey), the "Gin-Gin Mule" (using gin instead of vodka), or customize the "Fruit Mule" by adding berries or cucumbers, which is equally exciting.

  • I personally recommend Fever-Tree Ginger Beer, which has a pure ginger flavor and pairs well with vodka. If you don’t have a copper mug at home, a highball glass will do the trick, but a copper mug will make it 100% cooler and look incredibly impressive!

The Moscow Mule is a classic among classics, refreshing and photogenic. Whether you're cooling off in the summer or savoring a party, it's always the center of attention. Hong Kong friends, if you're looking for a simple, unique, and unique cocktail, try making a Moscow Mule at home and experience the ultimate blend of spicy ginger and refreshing flavors! 🧊🍋🫚🥂
