San Sebastián (Donostia) - 2025 Travel Guide
🌊 San Sebastian Travel Guide
San Sebastián, nestled on the Bay of Biscay, is known as one of Europe's most beautiful bays. It offers a relaxed beach holiday atmosphere, world-renowned Michelin-starred restaurants, and Basque tapas culture. I find its atmosphere to be more refined than the more welcoming atmosphere of the south.
📍 Must-visit tourist hotspots
1. Playa de la Concha
- Features : One of the most beautiful urban beaches in the world, the crescent-shaped beach is surrounded by mountains and has magnificent scenery.
- Editor’s Tip : Sunbathe or go boating during the day, but strolling in the evening is the most romantic.
2. Old Town (Parte Vieja)
- What's special : The heart of San Sebastian, with its narrow streets lined with countless Pintxos bars.
- Editor’s Tip : We recommend visiting in the evening to experience the most authentic Basque life while enjoying a glass of wine and snacks.
3. Monte Urgull
- Features : There is a statue of Christ on the top of the mountain, overlooking the entire city and the bay.
- Editor's Tip : The hike up the mountain is not difficult, and it is recommended to go early in the morning or at sunset.
4. Monte Igueldo
- Features : Another scenic spot, take the century-old mountain cable car up the mountain to see the panoramic view of Concha Beach.
- Editor’s tip : There’s also a small amusement park at the top of the mountain, perfect for taking photos and checking in.
5. Museo San Telmo
- Special features : Museum dedicated to Basque culture and history.
- Editor’s Tip : Suitable for travelers who want to gain a deeper understanding of local culture.
6. Comb of the Wind (Peine del Viento)
- Features : This public art work by sculptor Eduardo Chillida features three giant iron sculptures standing against the sea breeze.
- Editor’s tip : The sight of the iron sculptures is particularly stunning at night when the waves hit them.
7. La Bretxa Market
- Features : Local food market, Michelin chefs come here to purchase.
- Editor’s Tip : Mornings are busiest, and you can buy fresh seafood or local ham.
🍴 Must-try food in San Sebastian
San Sebastián is a foodie paradise , boasting one of the highest densities of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. Here are some of my personal recommendations:
-
Pintxos (Basque snacks)
- Similar to tapas, but more delicate, usually held to the bread with toothpicks.
- Must-try: grilled bell peppers, cod, foie gras, seafood skewers.
-
Cod Stew (Bacalao al Pil-Pil)
- A classic Basque dish, stewed with olive oil, garlic and chili peppers.
-
Steak (Txuletón)
- Thick-cut Basque steak, charred on the outside and tender on the inside, with a generous portion.
-
Fish soup (Marmitako)
- A traditional fisherman's dish, stewed with tuna and potatoes.
-
Basque Cheesecake (Tarta de Queso)
- Blackened on the outside and soft and smooth on the inside, this dessert is a must-try!
-
Cider (Sidra)
- A Basque specialty wine, often enjoyed with Pintxos.

- The old town and beach area are great for strolling, and almost all attractions can be reached on foot.
2. Bus
- Covering the city and surrounding areas, a one-way ticket is about €1.85.
- You can purchase a Mugi card for added convenience.
3. Bicycle
- The city has Dbizi public bicycles , which are suitable for riding along the Turia River and the seaside.
4. Train (Renfe / Euskotren)
- Connecting Bilbao, Pamplona and Bayonne in France.

- To and from Madrid, Barcelona and other cities in northern Spain.

- For long-distance flights, you can choose Bilbao Airport (BIO) , which takes about 1 hour to arrive by bus.
🎯 Editor's Summary
San Sebastian is a city where elegance and delicious food coexist. I think the best way to enjoy it is:
- During the day, you can enjoy the sun at Concha Beach or hike up the mountain for a panoramic view of the bay.
- In the afternoon, visit the old town and the market to experience the Basque culture.
- In the evening, visit the Pintxos bar and experience the most authentic food culture with a glass of cider.
📌 Editor's Note:
- San Sebastian is crowded with tourists in the summer, so it is recommended to book accommodation in advance.
- When visiting Pintxos bars, don’t order too many at once. It’s recommended to visit several and try one at each.
- If you want to be a little more extravagant, you can make a reservation at a Michelin three-star restaurant (such as Arzak or Akelarre) and experience world-class cuisine.
