【Car Tips】Details to pay attention to when test driving

🚗 Our guide to Hong Kong test drives: Things to keep in mind

In Hong Kong, a test drive is a crucial step before buying a used or new car. A test drive isn't just about experiencing the driving experience; it's also a crucial moment to inspect the vehicle's condition and determine if it's worth buying.
Especially in the used car market, a good-looking appearance does not mean there are no problems inside. I have seen many examples of cars that are "clean on the outside but rotten on the inside", so you must be careful.

1️⃣ Preparation before the test drive

1.1 Confirm vehicle documents

  • Registration document (vehicle license)
Confirm that the license plate, chassis number (VIN), and engine number are consistent with the information provided by the seller.
  • Insurance Arrangements
In Hong Kong, test drives must be covered by third-party insurance. This is usually arranged by the dealership for new cars, but for used cars, ask the seller if they have insurance to cover the test drive.
  • Maintenance records
Understand past maintenance records to avoid discovering long-term hidden dangers in the car after a test drive.

📌Editor 's tip : Before a test drive, it's best to take photos of your vehicle's license plate and all four corners of the vehicle to avoid any disputes.

1.2 Plan a test drive route

  • It covers urban areas, uphill slopes, downhill slopes and highways to comprehensively test vehicle performance.
  • Choose a time when traffic is less busy, such as weekday mornings, to avoid traffic jams that can affect your experience.

2️⃣ Key points to observe during the test drive

2.1 Startup Phase

  • Cold engine start sound : When you start the engine for the first time in the morning, listen to see if there are any unusual noises from the engine (beeping, metal friction).
  • Dashboard warning lights : All lights should light up when starting and then go out; if the lights stay on continuously, there may be a malfunction.

2.2 Inspection while driving

Engine and acceleration

  • Is the acceleration smooth? Is there any delay or jitter?
  • Is the throttle response sensitive, especially on uphill sections?

gearbox

  • Automatic transmission: Is the gear shifting smooth? Is there any sense of jerkiness?
  • Manual transmission: Is the gear shift easy? Is there any sticking or unusual noise?

Suspension system

  • Is there any abnormal noise or excessive bouncing when going over speed bumps or uneven roads?

steering wheel

  • When driving on a straight road, the steering wheel should remain stable and should not deviate to one side.
  • Is the steering flexible? Is there any unusual noise when turning?

Braking system

  • When you lightly step on the brake, is it smooth and does not lean to one side?
  • Is the braking force sufficient during sudden braking? Is there any metal friction sound?

Air conditioners and electronic equipment

  • Is the air conditioning effective enough? (A must-try in Hong Kong summers).
  • Check whether the functions of audio, navigation, reversing camera, window lift, etc. are normal.

2.3 Sound and smell

  • Abnormal noise : Are there any abnormal noises in the engine compartment, chassis, suspension, or brakes?
  • Unusual smells : Burning, gasoline, and moldy smells may all signal problems.

2.4 Field of view and comfort

  • Chair support and sitting comfort.
  • Do the rearview mirrors and A-pillars affect your vision?
  • The level of wind noise and tire noise while driving.

3️⃣ Inspection after test drive

3.1 Observation after parking

  • Check for signs of oil or water leakage on the ground (engine oil, water in the water tank, transmission oil).
  • Listen for any unusual noises or dripping sounds after the engine is turned off (a small amount of condensation will normally occur with air conditioning).

3.2 Ask sellers key questions

  • Has the car been in an accident?
  • When did you do the major maintenance?
  • Have you replaced any major parts (engine, gearbox)?

📌Editor ’s tip : Don’t just rely on verbal answers; it’s best to have written evidence or repair receipts.

4️⃣ Special Notes for Hong Kong

  • Right-hand drive car : Are you used to the position of the steering wheel, pedals, and gearshift? Especially for cars imported from other places, some designs may be different.
  • Hong Kong road conditions : Test your flexibility in turning around and parking on narrow roads.
  • Weather influence : A test drive in the rain can better test the performance of wipers, lights, and brakes.
  • Tunnels and highways : Test the stability of long-distance cruising.

5️⃣ Editor’s Summary

A test drive isn't just a "scare" experience, it's a comprehensive health check :

  1. Eyes : Look at the instrument panel, exterior, and interior details
  2. Ears : Listen to the sound of the engine, chassis, and brakes
  3. Nose : smell whether there is any unusual odor
  4. Hands : feel the steering, acceleration, and braking

💡Editor 's reminder :

  • Please don't be afraid to ask questions and try out every function carefully.
  • Pay special attention to details when buying a used car, as the cost of repairs can be very high once you buy it.
  • It’s best to take an experienced friend or technician with you to try it together; a second pair of eyes will help you catch more problems.
