Introduction to Hong Kong Traffic Offence Points System
The Hong Kong Traffic Offence Points System (commonly known as the "Demerit Points System") is implemented in accordance with the Road Traffic (Demerit Points) Regulations (Cap. 375B). Driving offences will result in demerit points. If 15 points are accumulated within two years, the driver will be suspended immediately.

Note: Some offences (such as driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a licence, etc.) will be directly sentenced by the court. The fine and suspension period will depend on the severity of the case.
Demerit Points Accumulation and Immediate Suspension Rules
Score accumulation calculation method
- Demerit points will be valid for two years from the date of the offence.
- If 15 points or more are accumulated within two years, the license will be suspended immediately.
Suspension Details
- First time accumulating 15 or more points within two years: three-month suspension .
- 15 or more points for the second or subsequent offence within two years: six months' suspension .
- You are not allowed to drive any car during the suspension period.
- Your driver's licence will be suspended and must be returned to the Transport Department.
- After the suspension ends, the deduction points will be reset and recalculated.
Legal basis
- In accordance with Section 45 of the Road Traffic Ordinance and the Road Traffic (Offence Points) Regulations (Cap. 375B).
Other important notes
- If a driver drives during the suspension period, it is a criminal offense and the driver will be prosecuted and sentenced to a more severe penalty.
- Suspension notices will be in writing and must be complied with.
- If you object to the deduction, you can appeal to the court.
