A whistleblower once again pointed out that although Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air is positioned higher than the general models, its performance is still inferior to the iPhone 17 Pro series.

Main differences

  • Product Positioning : iPhone 17 Air will replace iPhone 17 Plus and become a member of the 2025 new phone lineup, designed with an ultra-thin body.
  • Processor : Equipped with the same A19 chip as the Pro model, but it is a chip-binned version . The GPU core count is 5 cores , while the Pro model has 6 cores .
  • Memory : 8GB RAM, the lowest in the series.
  • Performance strategy : Although the A19's performance is comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 , Apple may choose to reduce power consumption to extend battery life rather than pursue extreme performance.
  • Screen and battery :
    • The screen size is 6.6 inches , the resolution is 2,740 × 1,260 , and it uses Samsung M14 material .
    • Whether ProMotion high refresh rate will be included is still undetermined.
    • The battery capacity is limited by the ultra-thin design, which may affect battery life.
    • Rumor has it that Apple may adopt silicon negative electrode battery technology , which can increase the capacity by about 15% at the same volume.
    • If the battery life is insufficient, Apple Battery Case or MagSafe power bank may be recommended again, but this will destroy the slim appearance.

Market Observation

  • Some comments pointed out that the performance decline of non-Pro models is natural, but the gap is relatively small this time because non-Pro models used to use the previous generation of chips.
  • The biggest challenge lies in battery life , especially when the screen and processor specifications are close to those of the Pro model, the small-capacity battery may become a shortcoming.
  • Some people worry that this ultra-thin phone may follow the same path as the Samsung Galaxy Edge, as "thinness" is not the primary consideration for most people when buying a phone.
