🐟🍟 Fish & Chips Complete Guide🇬🇧✨

Hello all you British food lovers out there~ Today I'm going to share a classic British dish: Fish & Chips ! 🎉

This dish is arguably the most common takeaway from British street vendors. It features crispy fish fillets with tender skin on the inside, topped with golden, crispy chunky French fries, and topped with a side of green bean puree and tartar sauce or vinegar. It truly delivers a quintessential British experience in one bite! 🇬🇧🍋

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

Fried fish part 🐟

  • 500g white fish fillet (cod or haddock are best)
  • 120g all-purpose flour 🌾
  • 30g cornstarch 🌾
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 200ml beer 🍺 (frozen to make the crispy batter more crispy)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper 🌑 to taste
  • Lemon wedges 🍋 (serve after finishing)
  • Oil (for frying)

French fries part 🍟

  • 3-4 large potatoes (peeled and cut into thick strips)
  • Oil (for frying)
  • A pinch of salt

Ingredients & Sauces

  • Tartare Sauce (mayonnaise + cucumber + lemon juice)
  • Mushy Peas (cooked green peas, mashed into a paste, and seasoned with butter and salt)
  • Malt Vinegar (English Classic Soul)

👩🍳 Detailed cooking process

1. Prepare the French fries

  • Peel the potatoes and cut into thick strips. Soak in clean water for 30 minutes to wash away excess starch so that they will be crispier when fried.
  • Drain and pat dry.
  • First frying: Fry in oil at about 150°C for 4–5 minutes until half cooked and light yellow in color. Drain.
  • Second frying: Fry again at 180°C for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy before serving. Sprinkle with salt and set aside. 🍟✨

2. Prepare the fish fillets

  • Pat the fish fillets dry and season with salt and black pepper.
  • Sprinkle a thin layer of flour on it (to help the batter stick better).

3. Make beer crisps

  • Combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt.
  • Slowly pour in the ice-cold beer while stirring until it becomes a smooth semi-thick paste. 🍺
  • The batter should be used immediately to ensure it is crispy enough when fried.

4. Fried fish fillets

  • Increase oil temperature to 180°C.
  • Dip the fish fillets in the crispy batter, gently shake off the excess batter, and deep-fry.
  • Fry for 5–6 minutes, until the skin is golden and crispy and the fish is cooked through.
  • Remove from the heat and place on kitchen paper to drain the oil.

5. Complete the dish

  • Place the fish and chips on a plate.
  • Serve with tartar sauce, green bean puree, and finally squeeze on lemon juice or sprinkle with malt vinegar, and the perfect British fish and chips is ready~🐟🍟✨

💡 Editor's Tips & Variations

  • The secret to beer crisps : Always use ice-cold beer; the bubbles will make the crisps lighter and crispier.
  • Fish fillet selection : Cod is the most traditional, but you can also use sole fillet, grouper fillet, or even salmon, and the variations are equally delicious.
  • Healthy version : You can use an air fryer, spray the fish fillets with a little oil and then air-fry them; pre-bake the French fries and then air-fry them, the calories are half as much.
  • Hong Kong Fusion : Some people add salt and pepper to season it, or even add Worcestershire sauce, instantly turning it into "British fish and chips with Hong Kong flavor."
  • A favorite for kids : Cut the fish fillet into small pieces and deep-fry them into "fish fingers" for easier eating.

🎉 Summary

Fish and chips can be said to be the soul of British street food . Although the preparation is simple, it is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The fish meat is sweet and fresh. Paired with crispy fries and sour tartar sauce, it is really a delicious dish that you will never tire of. 🥰

I think the best thing about this dish is the combination of "evil" and "happiness". When you bite into the spicy hot and crispy food, you can hear the "crunchy" sound. Paired with a sip of ice-cold beer 🍺, it's simply perfect!
